Have you tried booting a bootable CD from that drive?

Check Toshibs's website.  That have all of the make and model replacement parts listed.  Once you have a part number you can search the web for a suitable equivilent.

Often an optical drive is still good even if it can't read anything. To test this you should run it with a separate OS than the one which is installed, that's why I say try to boot it using another OS. If you can boot from a bootable CD you know it can still read disks, and then there is a problem with your OS (I suspect it is a m$ OS) which would have to be troubleshot. If you can't boot a bootable CD, and your PC's hardware is built to boot from CD's (Older ones can't), then it is a hardware problem and you would need to get a new drive. If you do need a new drive, I don't know what you need help on for the link you provided. If that drive is listed for your notebook model then it should work. Actually you can very often use any generic drive built for notebooks. You often just have to remove the front from your current drive and put it on your new drive, and sometimes you also need to use other extra parts from the original drive so it fits mechanicaly.
