Greetings, ruavol2 !

1. Reset the Outlook toolbar template. With Outlook close, do a search for and rename outcmd.dat file. Restart Outlook and a fresh outcmd.dat file will be recreated.

2. Register an important Outlook file. Go to Start > Run and type regsvr32 OLE32.DLL
Do the same for INETCOMM.DLL

3. Disable Outlook Addins.  Go to Tools > Options > Other > Advanced Options > Addin Manager or COMM/Addins and disable the addins.

4. Start Outlook in Safe Mode.  Go to Start > Run and type

"c:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Outlook.exe" /safe

Your path to Outlook.exe may be a little different.

5. Create a new Outlook profile.

6. Repair Outlook. With Outlook open, go to Help > Detect and Repair.

7. If no joy, reinstall Outlook.  Go to Add/Remove Programs and highlight Microsoft Office. Click on Install/Uninstall.  A menu will pop allowing you to choose repair or reinstall.

When you reinstall Outlook, make sure not to install the last update that you had trouble with.

Best wishes!

ruavol2,

Outcmd.dat is located in C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook folder.  It is a hidden file, so you have to unhide hidden files. Go to any folder and select Tools > Folders Options > View. Check "Show hidden files and folders". Click OK.

Hi,

If war1's suggestions do not help, ensure that you had added the correct Office 2000 update. There are different versions. You may need to remove Office 2000 completely through Control Panel>Add/remove programs and then reinstall taking care to change the default path to a different path.

For example Office 2000 premium has several service packs. I had installed up to service pack 2. If you can remove and reinstall it may be a quicker solution for you.

None of my updates I noticed can be removed. They are now not removable. I also installed a tool called genuine advantage pack from windows office website. It seeems to have been maybe a culprit? Not sure.  Maybe I can recover with the outcmd.dat trick listed above.

Not exactly, If the Outlook Command Template is modified from within the Program itself, renaming it and then running a detect and repair will create a similar outcmd.dat file and not resolve the issue. But it is the easier of the options and you could give it a try.

ruavol2, if Step 1 above does not work, go on to try Step 2 through 7 until one works.

I will be able to remote in to the PC from MD to NYC where PC is and I will try tonight to get the problem solved. Sorry I have not been able to communicate. It was a priority as it was my wifes PC and she has been trying to get out of that God awful city and move south. I will try to fix this tonight when I remote in to her PC.
I have a feeling I am giong to have to reinstall.
Here is the thing. How can I get all the contact records and emails off if I cannot get Outlook to come up? I won't be able to export.

Can I just uninstall Outlook and try to reinstall Outlook or am I stuck with uninstalling all of MS Office? None of the things I tried above worked.

Yes, you can just uninstall Outlook.  In the Add/Remove Programs > Microsoft Office, when you select Uninstall, you get options to uninstall only Outlook.
