ringtones/image download

I am planning to built a website with mobile content like monotones, polytones, images which can be downloaded to the users cell phone.
These are the features planned
1) monotones request and download thru sms
2) direct download to mobile by submiting cell number in website
3) polytones, images download request thru sms
4) download thru wap browsing

Now, I dont have any experience in mobile content or wap. (I am an ASP.NET and J2EE developer)
I would like to implement this on a j2ee server.

My questions
1)How do I go about it? where do i start?
2)how is the content delivered to the cell phone?
3)Do i have use any other server?
4)Is this operator independant or do i have to code for each operator.

sreenathk: That link only has basics for creating wap site. Does not say anything about image/ringtone download.

If your content is the right format, i.e. a MIDI ring tone, then all you need to do is link to it (http://....), when you click on that link to the MIDI ring tone, the phone will automatically ask the user where to save the content.

If you need to find out what content types each phone can find, then google the UAPROF for a phone. It is an XML document that is available for each phone to show it's capabilities.

Many phones can also hyperlink an SMS, so you could SMS a one time URL, that they click on to get your content.

Try putting a midi file on a server and browsing to that URL (myserver.com/abba.midi), an see what happens !
