Linksys WRV54G VPN tunnel collapse

I have a LinkSys WRV54G with a VPN tunnel to my branch office. Recently the tunnel started to collape overnight. By renew/releasing DHCP the tunnel
comes back up. The local LAN retains internet access throughout. Could this be due to packet loss? The VPN stays up all day long with no problems.
I have established that it is not the router on the other end (its also a linksys)

On the WRV54G there is a setting "keep alive" located under Security | VPN | Advanced VPN set up
Make sure that is checked to maintain the VPN connection.
Also if you have PPPoE connection with your ISP (only PPPoE) on the set up page there is a similar option to keep the Internet connection alive called "Keep alive redial period". Make sure that is enabled and set to 30 seconds.
