Try unplugging everything (power, mem cards, joysticks, video out) for about 1 minute.  Then plug everything back in and try again.

Hi! I am still at work so can`t try your suggestion. do you have anymore suggestion if your suggestion won`t work?
Reclaim your office - Try the MB 660 headset now!

High level of background noise often makes it difficult for employees to concentrate fully on their jobs – or to communicate clearly on calls. The MB 660 headset helps you create a disruption free workspace.

Try purchasing an optical drive cleaner disk.  Might be about $10 or so at wal-mart.  Get the one that has a couple tiny bristles on the cd and use that on the machine.  If it's a PS1, chances are it will need cleaning.
Well, there's also a very real possibility that the unit is dead. Optical devices (CD readers) have lasers that do tend to die from usage over time.
I agree with ISoul, your unit may have died.  The nice thing about playstation is the fact that your can go get a new Playstation2 and your games should still work, i'm not sure the PS1 is still around.  You may also be able to get it repaired, however, the cost may be too high to be worth it.
