SBS 2003 Exchange SMTP Connector throttle

When using an external SMTP server gateway, is there a restriction or 'throttle' mechanism in the Exchange outgoing SMTP Connector to restrict the number of emails going out at one time if it receives say several hundrew emails from an internal user (say a publication email to many external recipients).

If so, is it turned on by default and where is it controlled?

Also, does the SMTP connector allow multiple outgoing SMTP streams or are they delivered one at a time?

Yes, there is a way to throttle it...  even if you are using a "smart-host" connection your Exchange's SMTP Virtual Server is handling the outbound traffic.  You'll find all the settings you are looking for by going to your Server Management Console > Advanced Management > First Organization (Exchange) > Servers > Servername > Protocols > SMTP > Default SMTP Virtual Server.  Be sure to click around on all of those buttons/tabs to see what is configurable.

If you are worried about a newsletter email clogging up your mail system, I'd suggest that you use an email service for it.  There is a great benefit in doing so, such as better tracking of who opens the email, whether they click through to any additional info, etc.

The list-builder service at www.Microsoft.com/smallbiz is only as much as $29.95 for 10,000 emails a month.  There are lots of other good services out there as well for this.  Alternatively, you can put a restriction on the emails to not go out before a certain time of day which would hold them until later at night.  However, this is only an Outlook option, so you would need to leave Outlook open and running on a machine to accomplish it.
