HP 3000 sheet stacker stacks up to 3000 sheets, printed and separated in just one step. Features high-capacity and job offset. Requires 2000-sheet input tray (C4781A).

The 3000 Sheet Stacker is supported on the HP LaserJet 8100/N/DN printer, and the HP LaserJet 8000/N/DN printer. The stacker is not supported on the HP LaserJet 5Si/MX/NX printer or on the HP LaserJet 8500 printer.

Hm, that's funny: At hp.com there is a page called

HP LaserJet 8500 Series Printers - Clearing Paper Jams on the 3000-Sheet Stacker and Stapler/Stacker
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&objectID=bpl08097&jumpid=reg_R1002_USEN

The c4779a is listed as accessory in the HP 8500 Service Manual. (page 512)

Sorry, but I'm still working on this.

But up to now kcarrim was right: The 8500 is not compatible with the 4779 (but there are several hints and reports that some 8500 work with a 4779) HP states that the 8550 is compatible with the 4779.
