Username and Password pop up after downloading and then closing a file

I am experiencing a small issue with my server.

On one of the websites hosted there is an option for users to download some Ms Word files. There is no issue downloading the files.

However if I select to "open" the file rather than "save" to my PC, the word document opens up in IE, which is fine. However when I close that browser with the word document in it I am prompted for a username an password.

I can just click cancel to it, but I guess a regular user might find it odd and confusing.

Is there a way to stop this happening?
