Change task priority

Is there a way to automatically set the task priority for a particular task?

I have some programs I want to always run at a lower priority level.  Currently, I go into task manager, select the task, and change it's priority.  Is there a way to have those programs always run at a different priority, without having to go into task manager and set it?

Hello Adam314!

Not using Taks Manager alone.  Lot's of third-party apps out there with more flexibility.  Just depends on your needs.

Adam,

To start a program in a certain priority mode, you can use the "Start" command in a batch file or from Command Prompt.

See:    Microsoft Windows XP - Start:
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/start.mspx?mfr=true

- - - Some of the Parameters - - -
/low : Starts an application in the idle priority class.

/normal : Starts an application in the normal priority class.

/high : Starts an application in the high priority class.

/realtime : Starts an application in the realtime priority class.

/abovenormal : Starts an application in the abovenormal priority class.

/belownormal : Starts an application in the belownormal priority class.

The only thing I'd need it to do is change the priority, and be free  :)   Any suggestions?

sramesh2k-
If I start an app in low, and that program starts a few other apps, will those new ones be in low also?

I tested it, and the subtasks to start at the lower priority  :)

Is there a way to do this through an icon on the start menu?  (other than putting the  start /BELOWNORMAL "app.exe" in a bat file, and calling that in the start menu)

Yeah, create a shortcut, and for the target put...

%windir%\system32\cmd.exe /c "start /belownormal program.exe"
