MAC computer with OS10 failing to connect to SSL pages

There seems to be a problem on the MAC that disallows a connection to SSL HTTPS pages.  I have tried it with both Mozilla and IE5.5 without success.  The computer is connected to the DMZ port on a belkin router and receives internet without difficulty.  Do you have any idea why SSL won't connect or what I can do to fix this?  I put URL's in IE's trusted internet zone and have the security set to low without luck.  Hotmail for example won't load.  Thanks
Who is Participating?
There is no IE 5.5 available for Mac OS X [the last version was 5.2.3].  It is also an extremely buggy P.O.S.
What happens if you use a modern browser such as Safari, Firefox, Camino, Opera, OmniWeb, or Shiira?

The same thing happens with both Firefox and IE(5.#) so it appears to be a general security issue on the MAC as opposed to a browser issue

IE definitely has trouble with SSL security certificates. However, I have no problems with SSL with Safari, Firefox or Camino. Does this happen with all SSL connections or just some? Try turning off your Mac's built-in firewall.

It does this with about 90% of the sites visited.  The firewall may be the issue.  How do I disable it?

Thank you, that cleared it up.
