error writing to cd

When trying to write data to a DVD I get the error "error writing to cd". I am runing RHEL V4 Kernel 2.6.9. The DVD is a Philips 8631 DVD +R. It can read DVDs created on other systems just fine. I place a blank DVD +R in the drive and the burn:/// window pops up. I paste a file of about 2k in the window, select "write contents to cd" and then get the error. All is done as root. /tmp has 9.4 gb free. Whats going on?

Thanks

I don't have K3B installed. When I attempt to install it, in Package Management I select K3B It requests disk2. I place disk2 in the drive and get an error "unable to access disk". If I run a mount I see the cdrom is not mounted. I then #mount /media/cdrom to mount the cdrom, but still get the error. This happens on both my production and test box.
