No email body text

Hi,

We have SBS 2003 and our users are suddenly unable to see any email body text through Outlook. This is happening to all users and only affects emails received before last night. This morning all emails appear to be fine.

There are no disk space issues, no plug-ins installed like PGP, and the server has been restarted. OWA does not display the body text either and if I save an email as a text file, it shows no body.

Does anyone have any suggestions please?

Thanks!

Edit: Attachments can be viewed but are blank as well.

is the issue with internal emails as well or just emails received from external recipients?

if it is with external emails only then it could be an issue with the scanning software that you use to scan emails before they are delivered to the exchange server/users.

It has happened overnight, so I don't think it is to do with the scanning software. It appears to have happened to both internal and external mail.

Thanks!

Fill in the form and get your FREE NFR key NOW!

Veeam is happy to provide a FREE NFR server license to certified engineers, trainers, and bloggers.  It allows for the non‑production use of Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows. This license is valid for five workstations and two servers.

The latest DAT is dated yesterday, it's McAfee Groupshield but I cannot tell when it was applied as the first user in cleared the Application log before restarting the server today. I have disabled the AV services and restarted the Exchange ones but no joy as yet.

have you disabled the anti-virus from the registry and then restarted the services?

steps are mentioned in the following article

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316650/en-us

once done, try sending email and check whether the message body is visible

Thanks, I've just tried that. The emails coming in as of this morning are fine, the body text is there but all previous emails have blank body text.

It appears as though something corrupted last night.

This is nothing but an AV issue.

i know it does not sound good!!! but let me try and give you an insight on how Mcafee Groupshield works.

I would like to tell you that Mcafee is indeed a great software, but a lot of softwares malfunction.

Mcafee groupshield scans emails that come in and go out in 2 levels, one at the Transport level which is call the ONACCESS SCAN and Store level called the VSAPI scanning.

The messages could get damaged if we have issues with the scanner at any level. If you also have a file level scanner, it is advised that you exclude X:\program files\exchsrvr\mailroot\ folder and x:\windows\system32\inetsrv so that emails messages when being processed are not damaged.

Hi,

This was indeed an AV issue. We still don't know what caused it but opened a ticket with MS and they determined it was AV but couldn't say why.

In the end we restored the store from backup into a recovery storage group, exmerged the mailboxes and exmerged them into the live mail store.

Thanks for the help.
