Request Throttle Question

The adobe forums are a joke.  I thought I would try them for a bit, but nobody provides answers.  Shame on me for going anyplace else :-)

Could someone explain the two settings below and how they could be adjusted to help performance on a busy cf7 server?

Request Throttle Threshold MB 2
Requests smaller than the specified limit are not handled by the throttle.

Request Throttle Memory MB 200
Limits total memory size for the throttle. ColdFusion queues requests if there is not enough total memory available. Any request larger than this limit will not be processed.

So here is a better explanation from the docs:

Request Throttle Threshold
Requests smaller than the specified limit are neither queued nor counted as part of the total memory. Requests larger than the specified limit are counted as part of total memory and are queued if the request throttle memory size has been exceeded.

Request Throttle Memory
Limits total memory size for the throttle. If there is not enough total memory available, ColdFusion queues requests until enough memory is free.

I would suggest that the throttle memory would be part of the JVM heap size. So you wouldnt want it to be 500mb if your JVM size is also 500. There would be no room for anything else.

If you are looking at 7.01 then the maximum size of post data has an effect on this number as that will take up the amount of request memory.

So - anything less than the threshold will be processed, no questions asked, and these will not be throttled. Therefore the majority of requests will go through pretty quickly. If you have a lot of requests that produce a lot of data, or that receive a lot of data then you should look at the typical size of these and  perhaps make the size of the throttle window smaller.

any more help needed?

I also think you need to look at this in a more wholistic way, tuning is a bit of an art, and you should be looking at your JVM settings and simultaneous requsts etc.

I can recommend www.cfperformance.com as a good reference on all things performance related.
