If you're interested in Science Fiction, Baen Books has a decent library of free books, available in several popular file formats.

It's not fair, but we can't express here "illegal" ways to get the hacked e-books. So read between the lines, do your own searches, etc.

This is a free online library.
It has loads of ebooks.
And there is a search by author, etc. on the side bar.

But you can't get current books.
Because they are being sold and it is illegal to distribute them online.

While I love Project Gutenburg (I work there myself), if you want current books on any topic:

http://www.fictionbook.ru/

Although the site is written in Russian, most parts of it have been translated to English. They all the best sellers from Mario Puzzo's Godfather to Dan Brown's Davinci Code. It is all available at no charge. The catch is: if you do not own the book, you must delete it from your computer after 90 days.

I love this. It's also great for quotes in academic papers.

This will work for sure.

Excuse me.

However, I know that according to where the website is based (Russia), it is not illegal or in violation of copyright laws. Besides, the site is designed on a sort of try before you buy basis.

If Experts-Exchange were based in Russia, with Russian servers and a Russian ISP, then maybe this would matter. But it isn't. EE is based in the US, and must follow US laws, which include the abortion of legislation called the Digital Millenium Copyright Act. A hideous perversion of the law created by a stupid and incompetent congress, but it's the law, so there's nothing EE can do but obey it.
