Exchange Backup Problems

I have a client with an SBS 2003 premium. server.  I installed a Quantum DLT S4 tape drive.  I used an Adaptec 29160 SCSI card and Veritas 10.1D.  Long story short backup crashes intermittently when backing up.  I will paste the errors below.  After a lot of trial and error I have found that I can backup to work as long as I don't backup Exchange.  I have replaced the SCSI card with an LSI and Adaptec Ultra 320 series cards.  I have replaced the tape drive.

I have created two backup jobs.  One job is just for exchange and one job is just for Data Only.  The Data  Only always works. This is on a Dell Power Edge 1800 server.  I have tried all kinds of SCSI settings.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

Chuck

Then, perhaps this?  http://eventid.net/display.asp?eventid=9&eventno=3756&source=adpu320&phase=1

BTW, I don't like using anything other than the built-in SBS Backup... it works pretty well and I find no advantages to using Backup Exec.

Hi chuckkotler,

try backing up exchange with the sbs backup or with ntbackup, does that work?
that way you know if it is hard or software related.

Cheers!

Yes, I am using the latest drivers from Adaptec which supposedly fix some timeout issues.  I am running an NT Backup to disk works.  I am told that NT Backup is much more forgiving than Veritas.

It's not that it's much more forgiving... it's that the built-in SBS version of NT Backup is designed to work with ALL of those server funcitons in the same box.  Something that really no other program offers natively.

The integration of Volume Shadow Copy along with the specific way that SBS uses NT Backup allows for a complete server backup without having to shut down Exchange or worry about missing any data.

There's an overview of the process here:  http://sbsurl.com/backup

And just FYI, NTBackup was written by Veritas... ne: Symantic.  But they didn't engineer SBS... so that's where the magic comes in.

I now have backup working correctly.  After 2 months of troubleshooting it, we found it would backup data files easily but not exchange which is backup read write intensive. I replaced the drive with an LTO which has been flawless.  I am not sure if the Quantum drive is a fault or if it is a veritas driver or some sort of issue with the Dell server but it is working now.
