Trying to install SonicWall VPN client 1009, to connect remotely to work.  It craps out midway through installation with:

"Failed to get version information for DNE."

I've installed this same piece of software, on the same computer, with the same hardware, several times previous, with no trouble.  The few places I've seen to download a DNE installation package are dead links.  And I never had to install it before, the other times.

Athlon 64 3800
2 GB RAM
Windows XP
ICS Enabled, hosting 3 other computers.
Tiny Firewall (error happens when this is disabled as well)

Tried downloading a fresh install package from SonicWall.  It did the same thing.  As soon as it gets to the part where it installs DNE, it crashes:

"Failed to get version information for DNE."

are you currently having any kind of AV or firewall software or another version of VPN client installed on the computer? if yes, you better disable it in advance or uninstall it at all.

VPN client software commonly installs a virtual network adapter and its driver as well as other lower level network components on the target computer. all of these may be controlled and monitored by the active AV or firewall software on the computer. this may cause a failed installation.

hope it helps,

Thanks for trying, bbao.

It was just one of those things.  A clean install of XP fixed it.

thanks for the grade.

a few more words for installing VPN client or similar software which modifies network settings directly:

1. better disable any network related software, such as firewall or anti-virus software before actually installing.
2. always enable XP's System Restore function, so you can instantly restore your system after making a mistake.

hope it helps,
