border width inclusive in total width in IE

If I have a 300px wide container div with a 2 px border and I put a div inside this one with three 100px images, the last one will drop down to the next line in IE because  the border width is inclusive in IE . IN Mozilla and  NN it is not inclusive in the width. How do I get this to work in all browsers?

FYI... I kn ow I can put it all in another div and just give it a bg color and bigger width to create a border but didn't know if there was a way to not use additional div?

Start of adding a <!DOCTYPE definition to make IE get into standard compliance mode. This will help your development, because IE will behave more like other browsers along the W3-standards.

I have one:

<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN">

It is incomplete. Try having:
<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/loose.dtd">
