Mapped drives over VPN in SBS 2003 environment

Posted on 2006-06-04

I have configured a SBS 2003 Server with RRAS and can connect via Remote Desktop and VPN just fine.  However, the mapped drives will not connect via \\servername\sharename - but will connect via \\ipaddress\sharename.  Sometimes that does not work correctly either, so I am thinking that there is something wrong with the DNS settings?  Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

check the ipconfig and ensure that the sbs is being set as the dns server on the vpn clients. you can also go into the vpn client and set the dns manually to test this. (provided it is the windows vpn dialer)

I have had the same problem and found that enabling WINS fixed the problem. For some reason WINS was able to connect to DNS share names over a slow connection without problem.

    - Enable WINS if it is not already
    - Add wins address to the IP address given to VPN access

Since I have done this I have had no problems.

    Wingatesl and Virando,

Thanks for the assistance - I did check the DNS server setting in the VPN connection and found it to be correct.  I also verified that WINS is configured and running.  I believe someone else mentioned or I found another possible solution here at EE that indicated to put the IP address with Server Name in the LMHOST file.  So I did that - seems to be working so far - will update this if anything changes or if all continues to work smoothly!

    Thanks again for the help!
