Good cheap car camera?

I keep getting cut off while backing-up.  And the law generally is: if you back into someone its your fault; unless you can prove otherwise.  And half the time you can't prove that its their fault.  And in my cases its so if'y, the case will generally land in their wining hands.  That I don't want.  I want justice, and one word of truth doens't really help.  With my knowledge and experience the courts tend to favor the guilty.  Like it or not; it's true.

This is what I want to do:

I want to install a small video camera in the back of my car.  Where, I can shove it under a box.  To make it look like a usless peice of equipment, but to the point where it blends in extreemly well to the car.  I don't want it to move around while driving, so it needs to be on a small support.  That would be great.

My price range for this is $500 to $1000 tops.  This is just a little experiment, expensive experiement, that I'd like to try during my spare time.  And it's one I'm definately going to do when I have the money for it after college.

-Thanks for the advice

Trouble is that the camera will only record the *relative* movement between the two cars, there is no fixed point of reference where you can see that you are stationary, and the other car is moving - unless you can also record something to the side of the cars too.

That's true, but what I'm trying to get is whom hits whom frist.  And video is sometimes is the best thing you can use.  Audio is good, too but it can be so hard to get a decent answer.
What you are going to need to do to "prove" your case is (1) a video camera at the rear of your car (2) transducers which convert measurable movement into a Java applet (3) a recording device which captures web pages: on the web page would be your camera image, and the Java applet displaying the speed your car was moving at any given time.

Transducer: a wheel pulse measuring device which gives an indication that the car is moving forwards, backwards or (in the absence of pulse - stationary).  It doesn't need to do anything fancy like show rpm.
Are you planning on putting the camera inside your car, looking out the back window?  Or do you want it outside your car, like below the rear bumper?
Sorry to be patronizing sazukaChan, but you're having all this trouble when reversing your automobile and you're planning to go at it again? -- and then try to proove your innocence in court -- and you're not even out of college yet.
Don't you think the judge is going to ask you why you installed a camera in the rear of your car. You will be judged as an 'accident that was looking for a place to happen', which in reality is true.

You seem to like a fight, so why not study law at college, and one day you may be able to defend some client that has installed a camera in his vehicle and has backed into some poor, unsuspecting schmuck. Good luck with the case.

This reversing isn't on the freeway is it?

Ah, but this is the way inventions happen (I'm taking a more balanced view on this).  Who invented the device that sits at the back of your car which tells you you are about to hit the back of the garage?  We live in an age where if something is possible, someone is going to come up with an angle on how to make money out of it.
<Who invented the device that sits at the back of your car which tells you you are about to hit the back of the garage?>

Ah yes, the wife, wonderful little invention.

Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha!!! The best one ever made :)
sazukaChan: This is a project for you mate. One day you will thank us!

They modify numerous consumer items, including cars. I think you can find something on their site.
You know what would be better, 2 small camera's.  One looking each direction fromt he rear of the car, which leads up to a little monitor in the front of your car.

This was you can avoid the whole fight of who hit who by not being hit in the first place.
>I keep getting cut off while backing-up.

If something happens once it is an accident.

If it happens many times, then there is an operator problem.

The toughest job of any expert is advising a client when the problem is their own personal problem and needs to be corrected with better training or attention to their task.

This is not a problem that technology will solve, unless you are using the camera as a backup camera to let you know that you should stop and let the other car pass.

I apologize for the extreemly late delay on every one're responses.  College courses came to an end rather fast and homework kept building up on me....

For moorhouselondon's response:

That's a very helpful idea.  That might just work.  But don't cars with gps installed have something like that?  Or, you're idea, could easily be changed to motion sensors every where on the car.

----------------------------------------------------------------
For Adam314's response:

I actually don't mind putting a camera in either place (inside the car or looking outside the backwindow, ect.)  If I were to do that, I'm not exactly sure what type of camera I'd need?

----------------------------------------------------------------
For fredshovel's response:

Lol, I've not yet willingly backed into someone once and I have no cases to prove or disprove.  What part of "expreiment" (politly asking) didn't you understand?...

If the judge/cop asks why a camer is inside my car, I'll usually mention something like "Why must you think I"m out looking for accidents?  This camera, is just an experiement I'm working on to see who hits who first.  It's all coincidental..."

I honestly would study law, but I have difficulty with names, and memorizing laws.  I've tried law classes at the community college I went to, and I could even pass the first test.  To much information, and it'll take a lot of effort for my mind to finally understand them.

And these cameras are just for any where.  I don't care where, when, how, or why.  (And again, this isn't intentenal for an accident, it's just an experiment...)

----------------------------------------------------------------
For moorhouselondon's response:

You're so ture, that this is a device that can have money made from it.  Currently my car is a Honda Civic LX 1994 version (I think; it's clear that it's around that make.)  Currently, there is no divice that sits in the back of the car to do anything like this yet.

----------------------------------------------------------------
For fredshovel's response:

Ah, thanks.  But currently it's daughter.  (I'm still living at home...)  Currently, there is no divice that sits in the back of the car to do anything like this yet.

----------------------------------------------------------------
For neopolitan's response:

Yes, thank you.  You're right about this project for me.  And, hey, if it ever launches big, I'd be happy to mention you all.  (I'm just so sorry that I didn't have time to respond to you all during finals month and graduation month.)

----------------------------------------------------------------
For bk_jreinstin's response:

Sweet, thanks.  Thoughs are just about the right size I was looking for.  Small, out of the way, and not to pricy.  I might just consider picking a couple up.  And if they don't work; they'll be converted into a home security system for our house.  (It's so cheap to build your own; I honestly don't see why I should pay thousands for company built ones...)

----------------------------------------------------------------
For minidiez's response:

Thanks.  I'll pop over there and take a look.

----------------------------------------------------------------
For fredshovel's response:

You're just right.  bk_jreinstine supplied me some links with tiny cameras.  They're quite helpful and just about the right price for that size.

----------------------------------------------------------------
For arthurjb's response:

Yes! Thank you!  You're finally understanding my main point.  Using the cameras/devicde to back your self up as an aid to the case.  Though you're also correct about opperator problemes.  I'm fairly calm and quiet most of the time, and it takes alot (and I mean alot!) to get me mad... Thakns for your input.
----------------------------------------------------------------

If any, I look forward to hearing responses....
so...
Have you decided what you are going to do ??
Not entierly, but thanks to every one's ideas, it's given me alot to think about for a working prototype.  Thaks for the input every one.
