Help with "erasing a background"

Hello,  My desire is to "erase the background" from a photo.  The photo is of a handbag that want to exhibit on a web site.  I wish to remove the background and then, add a shadow to the bag so it Pops Out to the eye.  I have used the Magic Eraser tool (Photoshop CS2) and  have my background now as gray and white checks, looks good, bag is outlined well.  So, how do I finish it off...........get the checked background to disappear and add shadow to it?  I have serached on line and while there are tutorials out there, none goes into detail beyond what I have done, they seem to assume I should know and perhaps I should, but alas I do not.

Thanks so much!!!!  Doreen

The checkered background is just the background of the canvas in photoshop...  When you save it, it will not be there.  I would recommend adding a new layer and filling it with white or something.

To add a shadow, double click on the layer which will bring up the layer styles.  Click the dropshadow button and play with the settings on where you want the shadow to display...
