server desktop won't display

One morning, I logged into the server under the administrator account, only to find a blank desktop.  Nothing but the start bar.  If I drill down to c:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Desktop, I can see all the shortcuts and folders, yet none of it is displayed.  I can right-click on the desktop itself and choose New > Folder.  Nothing is visible on the desktop still, but if I hit enter, a new folder appears in windows explorer.  Still nothing on the desktop.  I can create a new folder in windows explorer, but still nothing on the desktop.

Any ideas?
