Exchange service issues

I'm not all that familiar with exchange other than setting up a few times on various client's servers etc.

I've just recently setup a brand new server to handle a small office's (12 computers) workstations.  The server was being used as DC, DNS, DHCP, File Serving, Backup (veritas) and Exchange.  Everything was running perfectly as far as I could tell.

Shortly after that server was setup and data was switched over from the previou server, I took it and upgraded the memory and installed Server 2003 on it.  The proposed old server was to be used to take the tasks of File Serving, DC, DNS, DHCP.  So basically the brand new server would be handling Exchange, DC, DNS and Veritas Backup Exec.

When exchange was setup on the sole server the deployment tools were used to ensure it's proper execution.  Everything was working great until I added the second (old) server back in and setup as DC.

The following errors occur on startup.

First the computer boots up saying one or more services failed to start on boot up

System Errors:

Event ID: 7024

Description: The zone kellyhulmepc.local was previously loaded from the directory partition MicrosoftDNS but another copy of the zone has been found in directory partition DomainDnsZones.KellyHulmePC.local. The DNS Server will ignore this new copy of the zone. Please resolve this conflict as soon as possible.

If an administrator has moved this zone from one directory partition to another this may be a harmless transient condition. In this case, no action is necessary. The deletion of the original copy of the zone should soon replicate to this server.

If there are two copies of this zone in two different directory partitions but this is not a transient caused by a zone move operation then one of these copies should be deleted as soon as possible to resolve this conflict.

To change the replication scope of an application directory partition containing DNS zones and for more details on storing DNS zones in the application directory partitions, please see Help and Support.

After windows boots the services don't start on their own (information store and MTA services)  but I can manually start them and outlook seems to work fine.

Any help would be appreciated.

I think and this is just a rough guess, Your old server was the DC previously. Enabling it would have caused the new server DC to go wonky. You will need to demote that server to a Backup DC, The new server as Primary DC and then check.

To get more info on how to do this, visit http://search.microsoft.com/results.aspx?mkt=en-US&setlang=en-US&q=demoting+a+domain+controller

Thanks for the response upul007

The old server was taken out before the new one was put in basically.  The DC wasn't active on the older server before it was removed.  I do think it has something to do with Active Directory but I'm not sure what.

I'm toying with the idea of just pushing the GC over to the currently backup software and taking it off the exchange server completely, but I'm going to wait before I do that.
