And , if not , is there a software way to do it? For example any Service Pack or drivers ?

    SiSoftware Sandra can tell
    Ports information and USB version.
Another way is to copy from your external disk to internal one. If 700Mb copy exceeds 1 minute, then it's not USB 2.
Unfortunately is not a soft to do that, you need another phizical USB2 controller.

Windows DEVICE MANAGER will tell you without any 3rd party software to load/run.

Richt-click My Computer then Properties then choose HARDWARE and finally Device Manager.

Look for items that say "...USB {xxx} Host Controller..."

Where the {xxx} is some word like "Open", "Universal", or "Enhanced".  If one or more say "Enhanced" then you have USB 2.0.  As a double-check, choose that item and right-click its properties.  Choose the Driver tab and the Driver Details.

The driver for USB 2.0 will be USBEHCI.SYS.  With the "E" in the middle for "Enhanced".

jhance , you maybe mean payble version of Sandra. There are blocked all modules in downoable version of Sandra and so no Ports information and USB version.

I think and i looked in my device manager, that jhance gave the exact answer.
I also gave a test method that worth and it's necessary to follow, don't depend by the OS.
