Corporate Desktop

Hello,

Our organisation has offices all over the world.

We would like every computer to have the same desktop with the same links to our website, flash forms and software that is installed locally on every machine (the installation path is the same everywere). The desktop would be a full screen application that does not let the users tamper with the computer settings and navigation. The app should only be exitable with a password and disable alt+tab.

What is the best way to do that? Ideally we should deploy an installer that does this. You run it and that machine's desktop becomes the same as everyone else.

All suggestions are welcomed

Active Directory Group Policy is another way to start looking at this.

Thanks for that but I'm looking for something that will also be compatible with win2k and ideally also older versions of windows

Yes we use that in our intranet, however, I need to create something that I can send to non-technical people.

I.E. put a disk in and you have a desktop that has links to the corporate website, to the installed programs and to other useful websites. The app will be non exitable unless a correct password is provided and will not allow access to normal windows admin. I realise that a group policy may also need to be edited.

On the linux side of things the process you are talking about is used coined with Live CD.  So you might be able to look up in google :

Windows Live CD or something among those lines.

It sounds like you are looking for a software "thin client" setup.  There is lots of information available online about this.  To get you started you can look at this wikipedia page -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thin-client.

I guess this could help...

NextStart and WorkShelf at:

or DesktopX at:

Once you have created a custom desktop (highly customizable), you can install it on any machine that has DesktopX installed using a single theme file and load the app on startup.

You could write a simple client application using .NET and set this as your windows shell. I have done something simliiar in the past and its quite simple...
