Hi all,

Got a Dell Poweredge 2850 w/ a single CPU, put a second one in, doesn't recognize it.. Something stupid I'm missing or is it just a bad chip?

You probably need to update the processor driver in device manager to a multiprocessor version.  By default, I think it's a uniprocessor version.

If it doesn't recognize it at the BIOS level, it may be that the cpus are not close enough in manufacturing to be recognized as a matched pair (dual cpu configurations need to be the same, down to the stepping of the processors).

Dell servers have a utility at boot that allows you to configure dual CPUs, SCSI, etc.  Check with Dell for the specifics.  But I know you need to "enable" it via built-in BIOS and/or Dell utility.  Once enabled, you'll be in business.

    Hope this helps!

Problem solved.. Genius overhere (referring to myself) didn't happen to notice the ZIF extractor handle tucked neatly aside the cpu socket.  The two blue handles were ONLY for the heatsink.. Therefore the CPU was only sitting in the first layer of the socket, not all the way in.  It's so close that it sits level and appears to be in, but it's really not.. This would explain why there was a discrepancy of about 1/16" of an inch in the level of this heatsink to the one on the first CPU....

Gee, I've only been doing this for 15 years..  :)
