Free/Busy Information Not Available

Hello All,

We have Exchange 2003 SP2 and Outlook 2003.  We just changed domains AND Exchange Organizations.  We got the mailbox data from domain A to domain B by doing exmerge export and import.

The issue we are having is when people go to schedule meetings, some of our users show that their free/busy information is available, and some show that it is unavailable.  When I tried an appointment to about 12 users it was about 1/2 & 1/2.

So it doesn't point to a global thing.  Also, we only have one Exchange Server so there shouldn't be any replication issues.

Please let me know any ideas of things to check.  I did get the MS article on the legacyexchangedn not being lower case and that one doesn't apply.

Thanks much,

Tom

Hi TomJatABRG,

As a starting point I recommend launching Outlook from the commandline with the /cleanfreebusy parameter for those users whose information isn't showing up.  This will flush any free busy information for those accounts and give Outlook a chance to generate new information.

Cheers!

Hey BDF - thanks.

I tried this on one test user and it worked.  I tried it on another and got "Unable to clean your free/busy information on the server".  I set up a profile on my computer (I'm an administrator) for that user and ran it and it worked.  But when I logged onto another computer with that user's logon, I got the "Unable..." message again with the /cleanfreebusy.

Now I can have someone set up profiles for all our users and run Outlook and clean the free/busy, but I'm concerned there is a permissions issue and that they won't be updating free/busy in the future.

I don't see anywhere where there are permissions on that.  Or do you think it could just be that one user?

Your thoughts?

Thanks again,

Tom

TomJatABRG,

It may just be that one user, but then again permissions might be the cause of this for everyone experiencing the problem.  Those permissions would be set at the Exchange server.  I'm not as good with Exchange.  I'll look around and see what i can find on the permissions required for free/busy on Exchange server.

Ok, here's how to check the permissions to the free and busy information:

1.  Launch Exchange System Manager.
2.  Drill down to the public folder store.
3.  In the details pane, right-click Schedule+ Free Busy Information - AdministrativeGroupName, and then click Properties.
4.  Click the Permissions tab.
5.  Click Client Permissions.

The permissions aren't set on a per user basis though.

Thanks BDF - I checked and the permissions are the same as the old e-mail server - the default is editor.  So it looks like this is not the issue.

We did change the profiles on the desktop to point to the new server with a tool call Profiler, and this may have caused the issue.

Do you have any experience with that tool?

Thanks,

Tom

You're welcome, Tom.  Sorry, I don't have any experience with that tool.

The /cleanfreebusy should have fixed it.  It turned out to be a profile corruption of some sort.  When we recreate the profiles and do the /cleanfreebusy, it gets posted to the server.

Thanks again BDF,

Tom
