attempting backup on a Toshiba laptop and it shutsdown

I have been trying to backkup selected folders on a Toshiba laptop and part way into the backup process the machine just shuts down.  I have been trying to use Genie backup manager and have it set to send the files to an external Sony DVD burner.  Why would this be happening?  What else might I try in order to do the backup.  The reason for doing this is that the laptop was originally infected with the Winfixer Trojan Horse.  I removed this malware with a program called vundofix.  Also, the laptop was overheating and I thought originally that it was shutting down because of that problem but it probably was because of the Trojan Horse - Winfixer.  Any help would be much appreciated.

The simplest way would be to remove the disk from the laptop, connect it via a 2.5" to 3.5" adapter to a desktop PC as slave drive, then copy the data off the laptop's disk.

Another thing you could try is booting the laptop with a knoppix CD, then use the K3B, the cd burning utility included with knoppix, to backup the data to the external writer.

>>   Also, the laptop was overheating   <<  that is a good reason for shutting down the laptop.
I would  clear all fans and vents from dust - you can use canned air for dusting.
Check if all fans are running normally.
also check the cpu temperature in the bios, if too high, you may have to reinstall the heatsink on it with Artic silver.
here the temps for most cpu's :  http://www.heatsink-guide.com/content.php?content=maxtemp.shtml
Similar to rindi, you can also get a 2.5" external encolsure that hooks up to your PC via USB port.  Both 3.5" and 2.5" USB enclosures can be found for as little ast $10.  If your laptop is not worth replacing, you can use your hard drive as a portable drive as well.
