Spaceward Ho! for Windows 3.0 won't run on Windows XP ?!?! {dumb grin}

I dug up an old game I used to play on Windows 95 and 98 (I think) called Spaceward Ho! This is not 4.0 for Windows or for the Mac.  It is Spaceward Ho! with a minimum requirment of Windows 3.0 or greater.  I'd love to play it again, but alas Windows XP doesn't like this little application.  I've tried all the standards stuff:

- Compatibility mode in windows 95, 98/me, NT, 2000 emulations, 256-color mode, 640x480, disable visual themes, and turn of advanced text services in numerous configurations.
- yelling
- screaming
- kicking
- whining

NOTHING WORKED!! :-)

I'd like to be a cheap buggar and not buy the newest version that may or may not work on my system.  Has anyone else run into an error similar to:

WINHO
-An error has occurred in your application.
If you choose Ignore, you should save your work in a new file.
If you choose Close, your application will terminate.
CLOSE     IGNORE

**and then**

Application Error
WINHO caused a General Protection Fault in module WINHO.EXE at 0005:3C71.

Choose close. WINHO will close.
CLOSE

Anyone who includes terms similar to or generally meaning:
-It's too old to run
-It's a compatibility issue
-It was a stupid game anyway

will be summarily disqualified from any points assignment unless accompannied by smiley faces and a working solutiion.

:-D :-D :-D

Don't give up!

It doesn't work because XP doesn't support MS DOS

But:

Spaceward Ho! is supported by the (free) Sourceforge Project DOSBox !!!
Download from here:
http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/

Confirmation that your game has been tested & is supported here:
http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/comp_list.php?showID=893

If you have any configuration problems post again.

Happy Gaming!

I'm confused. This is a windows program, not dos.  It is for windows 3.0, but it is still windows. I'll try this dosbox thing, but is it possible that you are talking about an even older version of Spaceward Ho than I have?

Thanks.
Nah, Windows 3 really was a program running in DOS (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_3.x) it marked the begiinng of Windows as a standalone GUI
This is the right Spaceward Ho - although The Underdogs classify it as Win95/98 http://www.the-underdogs.info/game.php?id=1020

Good luck with DOSBox it has saved my hide with older games on many occasions

I downloaded DOSBox and installed it.  When I try to run the Spaceward Ho setup program, it says, "This program must be run under Microsoft Windows."  After installing it, it has multiple windows open with the desktop in the background.  I'm sure this is a windows app.  It may be a 16-bit winapp.  This must be the first port to windows or something.  Is there anything like DOSBOX that supports Windows 3.x or Windows 95? The regular compatibility mode settings do not work.

That is pretty much the one I have.  Mine doesn't say 2.0 at startup.  I tried installing your version, set the compatibility mode, but I get the same error. Ack!  What version of windows are you running, and what compatibility mode settings are you setting?

Thanks

Jeffery Smith
Download from the page I linked to
Set compatibility to Win95 640x480x256 on the SETUP.EXE file
Run setup (you'll get lots of Windows open)
Once it is installed navigate in Explorer to the game exe file WINHO.EXE
Change that to the same Win95 640x480x256 compatibility settings
Launch it from the shortcut in the Start menu

Good luck :o)
I tried what you said on two different computers. No luck. What WINVER are you running?  Any special patches or compatibility programs?
Winver = XP Home 2600 SP2
It just happened to be the first machine I had to hand when I downloaded the game, nothing special running.
Is this on your X2 box?  If so are you using 64bit Windows?
No, I tried it on my P4 3Ghz box as well without luck.  I'm going to try it on my old 2Ghz laptop just for grins.

BTW, In my search, I found a palm version of the game.  It works okay, but just like my new new technology machine, I have the new technology T5 Palm, so the game locks up and corrupts regularly on the palm too.  I'm guessing their primary platform is Mac as their newest version is for Mac only.  I'm going to try it on the laptop.  If it works, I'll award the points to you.  If not, do you know if I can split 100 points for your hard work and still have the question close as a thanks for all of your effort?

Best Wishes,

Jeffery Smith
Grr ...
Can't see why it's not installing on your P4 3Ghz if it will on mine
Know exactly what you mean about the Tungsten - I switched to Windows Mobile in protest!!

If not, do you know if I can split 100 points for your hard work and still have the question close as a thanks for all of your effort?
 - it's not like I need the points & would rather not get them for a solution that doesn't work
I'm happy with the "Thanks for the effort" :)

of course if it does work on the laptop ....

Masqueraid,

I'm looking for reasons too because I'd love to play my old game.

My system is fullly patched?  Yours?
I'm formatted as NTFS?  Are you Fat32?

I've eliminated everything else:
1 computer dual core AMD, one computer P4 3Ghz HT, 1 computer 2Ghz Intel celeron
512MB, 1GB, and 2GB of RAM
three different video cards
three different chipsets
XP home on laptop, XP Pro on desktops
I disabled pretty much every piece of software on the computers including AV

I'm going to try it on my garage computer... it's an old 1Ghz running W2K.  I could probably play using Remote Desktop.  Ack, what is this world coming too?  *grin*
Have now successfully installed this on half a dozen PC's all with XP (none with dual core) various combinations of RAM NTFS/FAT32  using the instructions above - all of them work fine - in fact I've played it for a while (although I prefer Elite!).

Just to check that you are using the download from squakenet
unzipped, set compatibility to win95 640x480 256 on the setup file, install and then when WINHO.exe is unzipped into the winho folder on your selected drive changing the compat settings as well?

This is soo frustrating I can't see whare the difference lies between our two machines.
I just typed in a nice big reply and didn't hit SUBMIT before hitting the split points!!! ACK!!!

I dug an OLD Windows 98 laptop out of the closet and I'm up and running.  I don't know what it could be either.  The only comminatlities that we haven't ruled out are:

- AVG anit-virus on all three (I did disable this using MSCONFIG on two of the three installs)
- I probably installed the older version i have on disk on all three machines. Maybe the install program dropped a DLL in a system directory, changed an INI file, or changed the registry. It doesn't have an uninstall, so short of monitoring an install, I'll never know.

Anyway, I'm giving you 250 and leew 50 for the tip on the VMWARE.  We may not have solved this problem, but it wasn't for lack of trying. I played it till 2 in the morning the other day and that monkey is off my back. :-)

Thanks again for all of the hard work.

P.S. What is Elite?  Is this the 4.0 version of Spaceward HO?  Have you played the 4.0 version of SWH?  If so, is it worth the money?

Thanks

Jeff
"What is Elite?"
http://www.the-underdogs.info/search.php?search_game=elite

The is also a Palm version called Space Trader that I had on my old Palm Vx (no promises with the T5 !!)

Haven't played SWH 4.0 although v2.0 seems fun!

Thanks for the points
