We are running Windows 2003 with Exchange server 2003

Most of our users are in our head office and make use of Outlook 2003
We have one remote user using a MAC (MacOS X) and accessing her email via POP3 and SMTP

The remote user recieves numerous "Delivery Status Notification (Delay)" - Below is the example of one of the emails she has forwarded to me regarding this error.

Our MX records look to be okay as per

There doesnt seem to be similar errors produced by anyone in our head office and I have no problems (so far) sending SMTP email from my home computer through my work SMTP Server (Testing)

I do make use of SMTP authentication (To prevent hackers from using the email server) - She seems to be authenticating properly.

The emails that are rejected ended up in the "ESM/Administrative Groups/First Administrative Group/Servers/ServerName/Queues/" and I can 'Force connection' and the emais appear to be transmitted.

We did implement a registry hack for POP3 to work with this client - I dont recall the specif registry modification, but it had to do with her email program hanging due to a 'missing' End Of File marker.

I am thinking the problem may be related to this? (As in her emails are hung up in the SMTP que becasu ethey are waiting for a End Of File indicator to send them off)

    Accepted Solution

    1) It's a WARNING message only.
    2) It simply means what it says, there was a delay in excess of amount configured in the server for delivery of the message.  Could be that the remote server is having problems or there is a network issue.

Usually these resolve themselves in due time.  If so, you will not get a final FAILED notification.  If your users are troubled by this and you've determined that there is no real problem (which is usually the case) them you can disable this message back to users in the Exchange settings.

The messages are failing if I leave them (That is I do not go to the Queue and "Force Connection" - The remote user is unable to send messages but internal Exchange users are having no problem (a side from the occasional problem which I assume is related to the destination server).

    So in a nut shell,
Internal users using Windows and Outlook have no problems sending email
The External user using MacOS has Delivery errors, and eventually Failure errors.
The External user's email makes it to the SMTP queue but it seems to just sit there
Forcing the connection manuall seems to resolve the issue
