create a dll in vb to connect to a webservice

Hi EE's

I have a project with some unique requirements - and im kicking tires

I have a web application written in classic asp / sql server 2000

My customer has an application that they are developing in visual c++ that needs to synchronize data in their application to my website

their application downloads data from a device and saves it into a csv file - each downlaod creates a new csv file (called an event file)
I need to have that data from the event file sent to my website - then the website needs to tell the client app data has been recieved
and then the client application will open the website and the website will display the uplaoded data along with other compiled reports

SO...the question is....

I think it would be easier for me to create an activex control in VB6 to give to them to program against rather than have them try to consume the webservice themselves?
that way - i can be confident it is not a problem with my webservice or activex control - and it would be an easier implementation for them
right?

We do something like that but we use the exe not dll because you may need user interface to display progress bar, setup paths, and any other connection settings that will take to get the files from one server to another.

Once the varies settings is in place then all the user needs to do is to click on the button labeled Go and that will transfer the files. I also have a command setup so that any program can just launch the exe and run it without user interface as long as the settings are set correctly.

my 2 cents

thanks lunchbyte
i considered that as well, but was concerned with the install/distribution of that model
their app being in vc++ has made it somewhat of a pain, but maybe an activex control rather a dll would suffice
that way, i could have some UI controls like you said, but wouldnt have to worry about installing the exe
thanks - lemme hear from some others (or more from you!)
this is more of an open topic and i will award points/grade accordingly

When it comes to install/distribution exe or dll, you will install the same files (like vb6 run time files and/or third parties that you are using) so it will make no difference which one you use. Just wanted you to be aware of that.

I recently worked on a project using VS.net used the window service project. I have it setup so that as soon a file is created in certain folder, the program kicks in gear and does it work in the background. It was great and fun so another thing for you to think about.

thanks lunchie
i understand - and i agree as far as the runtime
i just dont want to overcomplicate their process
I would have preferred it all be done in vb, but they already have the vc++ program
like i said - im kicking tires

if you or anyone has a better idea how to get data from a client app to a website than this idea

please share

Seems we have the same situation, my client, downloads data from AS400, saves it to a text file, filename used is date stamp, manually uploads the text file via my website, from there a report is generated and is shown in the website. uploading process is done via dll embedded in my website.

What you can do is tell the VC++ group to upload/send the csv file from a shared folder where your website resides, run a schedule that reads the folder contents if it contains a new file, that is every new file read, filename is being saved from a table for comparison against the folder. Then read the csv content and show it to you web.

thanks pat
problem is there will be millions of users
trying to synch their client pcs to the website
and the transfer and synch is going to be imported into a sql dbase at the website
and integration with the client app needs to be seemless - not depend on the user to select a file and so on
but just click a synch button in the client app
I appreciate yours and any comments I get on this question

what a robust application, itss like you're creating a dialer/trojan that sends info to/from your website.
