Creating an FTP site from scratch vs Sharepoint website

I am trying set up an FTP site for our company.  I would like for it to have multiple uses but the main one being that they can log in and download schedules, reports, and financials.  We are a Electrical Contract company and the people that would be logging in are Superintendents at various locations across the country.  Some have dial up and some have broadband.

Baisically as I see it now I will create a folder somewhere on the network that the engineers and project managers can place documents in and then have the Supers login and download or look at the document.  We have Sharepoint as well but I have never configured it, I can create different webpages for sharepoint but I can't access it from outside the network. (That may need to go into the Sharepoint area)

Thinking about it Sharepoint might be the way to go but what does someone with FTP experience feel like.
