I found this code on php.net which replaces links so that they open in a new window. I need to change it slightly so that text links do as below, but image links have rel="lightbox" inserted in the tag.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

function make_links_blank($text)
{
return preg_replace(
array(
'/(?(?=<a[^>]*>.+)
(?:<a[^>]*>.+)
|
([^="\']?)((?:https?|ftp|bf2|)://[^<>
\r]+)
)/iex',
'/<a([^>]*)target="?[^"\']+"?/i',
'/<a([^>]+)>/i',
'/(^|\s)(www.[^<>
\r]+)/iex',
'/(([_A-Za-z0-9-]+)(\\.[_A-Za-z0-9-]+)*@([A-Za-z0-9-]+)
(\\.[A-Za-z0-9-]+)*)/iex'
),
array(
"stripslashes((strlen('\\2')>0?'\\1\\2\\3':'\\0'))",
'<a\\1',
'<a\\1 target="_blank">',
"stripslashes((strlen('\\2')>0?'\\1\\2\\3':'\\0'))",
"stripslashes((strlen('\\2')>0?'\\0':'\\0'))"
),
$text
);
}

Try this addition:

function make_links_blank($text)
{
return preg_replace(
array(
'/(?(?=<a[^>]*>.+)
(?:<a[^>]*>.+)
|
([^="\']?)((?:https?|ftp|bf2|)://[^<>
\r]+)
)/iex',
'/<a([^>]*)target="?[^"\']+"?/i',
'/<a([^>]+)>/i',
'/(^|\s)(www.[^<>
\r]+)/iex',
'/(([_A-Za-z0-9-]+)(\\.[_A-Za-z0-9-]+)*@([A-Za-z0-9-]+)
(\\.[A-Za-z0-9-]+)*)/iex',
'/<a([^>]+)><img/iex'
),
array(
"stripslashes((strlen('\\2')>0?'\\1\\2\\3':'\\0'))",
'<a\\1',
'<a\\1 target="_blank">',
"stripslashes((strlen('\\2')>0?'\\1\\2\\3':'\\0'))",
"stripslashes((strlen('\\2')>0?'\\0':'\\0'))",
"stripslashes((strstr('\\1', 'rel="lightbox"') ? '\\0' : '<a\\1 rel="lightbox"><img'))"
),
$text
);
}

Thanks, that seems to have done the job!

I'd like to learn the intracacies of preg_replace but can't find any good sites. Do you know of any that explain what the symbols all mean and how they work?

You can find a lot of info on http://www.regular-expressions.info/
On that site you will not only find regular expression for php specific, but also more general information, and tutorials on implementing in other languages as well.
