The Identity Login screen for Outlook Express pops up randomly.

Hi, I attempted to get to the bottom of this issue previously and i thought we had the problem solved but alas, no.

I'll be in another application with outlook express 6 closed and the application will get interrupted because the OE 6 Identity Login screen has popped up waiting for me to type in a password. I type in my password and click OK and it disapears and Outlook Express does not start at that point. It will start if I dbl click on Outlook Express but not before. The problem is that I'll be in a game and it will pull me out of the game and then after I have logged in to the Identity manager, I can then eventually get back to the game. I have scanned with a lot of different spyware removal tools and even rootkit reveal to find nothing. This is a brand new load of Windows XP Home. I have also disabled Messenger from running. Any thoughts?

Does this always happen from the same game? If so, the game itself may be invoking OE to send email. If you had it configured for autologin, you might never know.

You could configure OE to remember your login and skip the identity screen, but that's just hiding the fact that OE is getting launched. Instead, I would try to identify the cause of the invocation and eliminate that (or live with it). Check Task Manager processes, try using FileMon, etc.

It does not always happen with a game. It has popped up without an application running as well. It is just more annoying because you get dumped out in the middle of a battle or a car race and by the time the program recovers, you are either blown or you have crashed into the tree. Anyway, what bothers me the most is that the identity login pops up and I enter my password, click ok and it goes away and OE does not start. By the way, this is also happening on a friend's PC. The common theme is we are using password protected Outlook Express Identities.

by the way, what is FileMon and where do I find it?

FileMon is a utility from SysInternals (http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/Filemon.html) that monitors file activity. With that, or with RegMon or PMon (on the same site), you might be able to watch file, registry entries, and processes and identify what is starting OE.

Don't assume that because you don't see the OE user interface that it didn't start. If it was invoked with enough information to send an email or do something else without needing user input, it might start after the password and close itself down.

This could be related:

You said you disabled Messenger, but this is listed as a startup app. Note that this could be the actual MSN Messager, or it could be related to a trojan.

Also you have Norton software installed, and that sometimes automatically launches Messenger if Instant Message scanning is turned on.

Thanks for looking at the log. I had actually renamed the Messenger folder to 1messenger so that messenger could not start. But tonight I removed that listing in the registry under the HKCU. i checked Norton and it does not have the Instant messaging feature turned on. I'll have to see if OE still tries to load since I made the registry change. I'll let you know.

Thanks for the help ET0000 but alas I could not solve the issue. I tried all of the tricks and tips I could find and I'll award you all the points for sticking in there with me. Ultimately, I replaced Outlook Express with Outlook and I do not get any unexpected OE identity login popups anymore.
