Permissions weirdness

Hi
Today i get a support call telling me a bunch of users can no longer access certain
folders/files in the group area folder. I remote control the said server (windows 2000 sp4
running in a W2K3 domain as a member server) and indeed find that various random folders
come up with access denied, even for administrator. Sometimes its at the root lvl and others
the problem starts lower down in 1 or more, though not all subfolders.

How weird? I really can't work out what has happened?

I went to the root level share and took ownership to domain\administrator and replaced
permissions on subdirectoies etc. All seems to be well again.

However, i'm really worried about this and as to why this could have happened in the first place.

This server currently has a failed disk on a perc raid controller, but is not part of the RAID 5 volume where
the group data area resides. In fact it was my hot spare.....but since i started backing up SQL databases to
it, it failed within a month. I have now resorted to backing up the SQL databases to the RAID 5 set and am
paranoid?

Any thoughts?

1.  Run a chkdsk
2.  Did you check the ownership of the files before hand?
3.  Enable Auditing.

1......will do

2.....only checked the ownership on the problem folders which didn't have any permissions for anyone. I had no choice but to re-take ownership.

3.....ok

Thnx
