Monitoring WAN Bandwidth Usage

Hi all,
I need to monitor my WAN bandwidth realtime and also need to find out which client is using how much percent of the bandwidth. I've had some problems with service unavailability and i think it was due to wan bandwidth saturation but need to find out for sure.

I have sonicwall as border firewall and then my LAN with sonicwall performing NAT. Unfortunately sonicwall does not have realtime bandwidth monitor.... Any ideas???

Thanks!
Vinod.

Who is your WAN provider?  You should be able to get statistical reports from them, and some like Sprint will usually provide you an extranet page to monitor it yourself.

Sorry didnt reply earlier. I didnt get notified of the post..

I have cbeyond comunications providing my T1 and i'm not aware of any such service from them and also since my firewall does the NAT, there is no way for them to find the clients occupying the bandwidth...

True you won't be able to monitor individual usage unless you get something like Webtrends or Websense or similar.

But any T1 provider should be able to provide usage statistics for the T1 itself.  I'd be really shocked if they cannot.

What does it mean to be "Always On"?

Is your cloud always on? With an Always On cloud you won't have to worry about downtime for maintenance or software application code updates, ensuring that your bottom line isn't affected.

I'm not looking to spend that money and install softwares on all machines. I want some software that uses snmp to track bandwidth used by any clients at any moment..

I'm really surprised nobody has looked into this. Without this kind of information, i fell like i'm blind when network gets congested all of a sudden..

The only way you are going to be able to track individual usage is if the firewall you have or router that is pointing to the T1 has software that does it or if you sit a box in between the network and the firewall that has software that does it.

I'm not familiar enough with Sonicwall's stuff but I what about this:  http://www.sonicwall.com/support/pdfs/How_to_Configure_Net_Monitoring_for_Bandwidth_Monitoring.pdf

Seems like they would make something or at least point you to a 3rd party vendor that you could test out or something.

If you are just wanting overall usage on the T1, again, the T1 provider should be able to provide that.  If they don't have immediate stats they should at least be able to start a statistics session for you for the next week or 2 and give you detailed reports on when the bandwidth is being consumed.

This solution is 2 expensive for me. They want $4000 for monitoring 25 nodes. But you showed me a valid product that i could have used so you get the points..

Thanks!
