Error on launching outlook - "word cannot open this document"

When I launch outlook 2002 SP2 I get the following error:

Word cannot open this document template.
(C:\...\STARTUP\Finereader6.sprint.dot)


Then when I try to close outlook I get this error:

The file Normal already exists. Do you want to replace the existing file?

WHen I click NO I get a Save as dialogue box which points to the microsoft templates folder.

The last thing I did on the computer before this problem emerged was to completely remove Norton Internet Security.

Any help greatly appreciated!

When you uninstall NIS, the antivirus check of emails in Outlook did not get uninstall.

Disable addins.  Do a search for rename extend.dat file.  Extend.dat is located C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook folder.  Extend.dat is a hidden file. Go to any folder and select Tools > Folders Options > View. Check "Show hidden files and folders". Click OK.

If no joy, you may have to reinstall MS Office, including Outlook and MS Word.

You should also do something else before carrying out war1's second suggestion (comment).

That is to view the properties of the Finereader6.sprint.dot file as well as the start up folder. Select the security tab and press the advanced button. See whether the permissions allow for the logged in user to use the file. If not add the user. If no joy, check the owner and see if the current owner is the logged in user.

This sometimes happens if the user does not have sufficient permissions or if the OS was re-installed and the folders copied from a previous NTFS partition.

After trying all the suggestions without any joy, I decided to reinstall MS Office and this solved the issue.
