POP mail is getting rejected by receiving mail account as being relayed

I try to send an email to anyone at XYZ company from my outlook pop up email it is sent back to me as “undeliverable”.  Here’s the exact message:

Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients.

 The following recipient(s) could not be reached:

      receipient on 6/9/2006 8:16 AM

            550 5.7.1 Unable to relay for xyz@xyz.com


I have to log out of pop up outlook and go into webmail to send the emails.  Kind of a hassle.  Can you please help me figure out what I need to do to fix this? Thisa user works out of her house.  Is this considered relaying becasue she is on her home network?

When you send email to that system - are you authenticating to the Exchange server? If not, then you should.

The user has to setup a account in the pop client and authenticate, I not sure if I have my  SMTP protocols setup correctly.  In oreder for my user to connect I had to turn off relaying.   Are there any special setting for access control on the SMTP connector, to allow connectivity and stop any possiblity of some outside source relaying from my email server?
Are there any special setting for the Relay Restricitions?

Please advise on this or relay references on proper configuration of your POP email setup on a exhange server?

Don't get POP3 and SMTP confused.
Authenticating for POP3 is not the same as authenticating for SMTP. Look for something that says "My outgoing server requires authentication" and enable that option.

Exchange 200x is set to allow authenticated users to relay by default.
