the answer is DON'T (but if you must jags has the answer)

nothing i hate worse than browsing a site listening to my music and some lame midi song comes blaring over top of what i'm listening to. I will leave your site immediately. If you must have music use the "Click here to listen" method. This is also an issue with a lot of sites that use flash intro pages. Sound should -always- be defaulted off with option to turn on and not the other way around.
