steelinventory will do the job.  and it's free.

plus, if you're in a domain environment, steel inventory has a tool which helps you add it to the login script, so it runs whenever a user logs into the domain.

how can this interact with an intranet/webpage?
zephyr_hex (Megan)DeveloperCommented:
if you mean, does it post results to a web page... it does not have this feature built-in...
but the log files it generates are .txt, so you could write something that posts the logs to a web interface.

and how would i upload the log files? go around all 200+ machines and run this tool to create a log file every time i need to know latest version of software on users machine - dont think so!
zephyr_hex (Megan)DeveloperCommented:
you dont "go around".  you install it so that it runs when the users log in....and it gathers all of the data onto 1 console for you

it actually works for computers not on a domain, too.  see the FAQ
for instructions on how to do the client scanning over the network, see the Help menu in the program.
