Can't seem to edit an Adobe PS 8.0 file

Hello.  We have a PS 8.0 file which shows several barcodes in the image that we use to print out for our company products occasionally.  The girl who normally does works with these is out on maternity leave, and we're in a bind.  We need to edit one of the barcodes, but the file seems to be one large image, instead of separate objects on the page.  Most of the menu items across the board are grayed out and inactive as well.  Is there a way to "change to edit mode" so to speak and edit a part of the page?

Your help is much appreciated.

Thanks,
Damian

Is the layer locked (look for a lock image in the layers window -- at the top of the window is a lock image that you can click to lock and unlock a layer)

Or you might possibly have to go to image > mode and change the type of color mode (you may need to use RGB or CMYK mode)... some color modes don't allow all types of edits.
