MS Word background purple and Outlook cannot send email using word

Outlook: when sending an email everytime I click send it says
Microsoft Office Word
So I disabled word as the default editor in outlook and email sends fine
Obviously it's word that is the problem, so I opened word and the background stays purple constantly. The text was defaulting to white.
I reset the settings to default and now the text is black and the background of the paper is still purple.
I deleted all the normal.dot files I found as well.
Anyone ever had this happen?
