Individual GAL's for sub-domains not displaying correctly

I have a domain with 9 sub domains - the primary domain and the sub's each have their own GAL based on the users mailbox location (store).  Everything worked fine for the past three years but recently 3 or 4 of my sub domains now see the default GAL and not their own.  How do I troubleshoot this?
