Reinstall of Sharepoint does NOT create the default website.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled Sharepoint per MS KB 829114 several times.
Each time, the default web is not created (missing) and companyweb is not operable.

Anyy help in creating the default web and its components would be greatly appreciated, or a reinstall that works!

No, it wouldn't because SharePoint is not the default web site.  

You need to follow this KB to reinstall IIS if you need the default site reinstalled:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/887305
