FileMaker Pro 7 - Exporting a Header Record + data records for use in Mail Merge

Is there a way in which a header record can be exported, so that the exported date file can be used as a source data file for an MS Word mailmerge template.

The header record being the names of all the fields being exported so that MS Word can match actual fields with mergeformat names.

I have tried creating a DUMMY record and pre-filled the fields with the names that I want to appear as header record field names. However, you can't always enter a text name into all fields and if you could, not that easy to always make it the first record.

I have looked everywhere within FileMaker Pro 7 and can find no parameter that can be used to export this critical detail. Ironically, FileMaker on Import allows you to align the first record of data imported. Surely there must be a reverse feature?

true, there is no way to export field names as the 1st data row. but you can do that easily yourself.
before exporting, create a new record, and for each field, set field value = current field name.
to do this, create a layout with all fields in it, then loop through all fields using goto next field (avoid to specify all fields, this way you can use a loop).
then you probably need an extra field to sort the way you need; for instance, sort all records the way you need, replace the sort field with a serial number, then number the header record field as 0; re-sort, then export.
I can write a little example if you like, just let me know.
you could also avoid all that stuff, create the header file on disk, export the data file the way you do it now, then concatenate both files on disk into a single file usable by word. this is only one shell command which can called by filemaker, either on mac or windows.

Many thanks, the first part will do very nicely and an additional thanks for the script example - worth its weight in gold.
