When I travel with my iBook, I often find an open WiFi which is not reliable and fades out from time to time. Do  get a repeater or a router or an antenna or what? Is there something small enough to carry with me for those weak signal areas?

Airport Express might be a possibility:

Indeed it is a possibility. However, the Apple page for it says "AirPort Express can extend the range only of an AirPort Extreme or AirPort Express wireless network." So I think it is not my best choice for extending the range of the arbitrary 802.11b open portal which I happen to encounter.

Thanks for the hint.

I'm hoping for an even better hint.

Another possibility might be a linksys WET54G wireless to ethernet bridge. These tend to have better range than built-in wireless cards in portables.
