Implementing AJAX independent of PHP/ASP/.NET. Plain html with javascript.

I am new to this but I want to know what exactly is this AJAX business. People say it makes websites load much faster, I really want to implement it but I dont know where to start. Can anyone guide me how to implement it? I am only allowed html and javascript on the webserver.

With AJAX you can load (part of) your page in the background, what gives it faster feeling (and in case it's just a little part of a huge page, it can in fact be faster also).

Because it is pure javascript, you don't need any serverscripting.

I recommand using the prototype Javascript library, wich can help you creating nice interactive web pages.
