You must set the correct container Layout. For example, if using JFrame, the default layout is BorderLayout, and if using JPanel, the default is FlowLayout, instead You can set it to BorderLayout too:

jPanel.setLayout(new BorderLayout());
jPanel.add(jDesktopPane);
