Replace color with adobe illustrator

Hi, all,

 I am brand new to adobe illustrator. I am running illustrator CS2 on XP Home. I want to replace a color on a button, leaving the text intact. However, the button is a merged image (a gif file). Is there a wayt to cleanly replace the color, or should I just start from scratch? Thanks!

Hi,

Assuming the letters to have just one color which is an unique color, use Swatch, making the color global.
Of course, if other parts than the text have the modified color, they will change too.
