Business Objects 11 does not allow optional parameters?

experts,

I'm new to Business Objects but another dept in our company is designing some reports for us in BO 11.  We wanted to allow the operator to skip keying in certain parameters when running some of the reports when applicable.  They tell us that BO does not allow optional parameters.  Every prompt to the operator for data must get some non-null response.  Is this true?  This seems like a strange limitation for a product this mature.

thanks,

arlie

Depends on how you're running it and whether the parameter was set to allow a null value.  I don't use 11 but in all previous versions if you're delivering the reports on the web (using BO Server) then it absolutely does require some type of non-Null parameter - I assume this behavior persists in 11.  Assuming everything is set up to allow it however, then there's nothing wrong with a null and a common occurance is to use a null check for parameters.  For example in a select expert you might have something like this:

if isNull({param1}) then
   {field1} = 'Something'
else
   {field1} = {param1}
