Joining Catalyst 2960 to 3548 XL cluster commander

I have a new catalyst 2960 switch that I am trying to add to a cluster.  The cluster command switch is an older 3548 xl switch.  I have tried several methods to add the switch, both command line, and through the Cluster Builder gui. Both ways result in a unreachable error.  I am wondering if there is a specific configuration needed on the 2960 to join the cluster?

I don't think the new 2960 even supports clustering. It was designed to use the Cisco Network Assistant. If you have not tried it as a replacement for your cluster manager, you might want to give it a whirl. CNA will manage your older 3548's too, and it's a free download.
